    • Digital Drop In

      About the event

      We will be running digital drop-in sessions on Tuesday afternoons starting Tuesday 24th January at our office in MEA House. If you have any problems or questions regarding your smartphone, laptop, or tablet then this may be for you.

      Our IT officer, Angus, will be able to help you with your questions regarding technology, and provide advice regarding new products. We can also demonstrate some products including Apple and Android smartphones and tablets and smart speakers.

      The digital drop in will be on a Tuesday afternoon between 1.30pm – 3.30pm at our office.

      We will run the digital drop-in sessions as a trial beginning on Tuesday 24 January and they will run each Tuesday until 4th April with the exception of 7th and 14th February.

    • Mac Group

      About the event

      Our first Macular Group of 2023 will be held on Wednesday 15th February in the Auditorium on the ground floor at MEA House.

      Our speaker this month will be Gareth Davies. He is coming to talk about his experience participating in Clinical Trials of the Port Delivery System which uses ranibizumab or Lucentis as treatment for Wet AMD.

      Last June he had a port inserted in his left eye and in November 2022 at week 24 he received a top-up. The Port contained a tiny amount Lucentis which was slowly diffused into his eye. This gives continuous control of the disease without eight or twelve weekly visits to hospital for an injection. He has since been told that since his original diagnosis he has only lost one letter in eye examinations, which is very encouraging.

      About the event

      We are holding a charity night to raise funds for Newcastle Vision Support.

      The charity night will be held on Saturday 18th February at Fairholme Social Club, Ferguson’s Lane, Benwell, NE15 7PL from 7pm – 11pm. Entry is £3.00 per person and includes a disco, raffle, tombola, a buffet and much more!

      If you would like to attend entry tickets are currently on sale from the office. Please call the office on 0191 232 7292 if you would like to purchase tickets. We also encourage you to bring along your family and friends.

      Raffle tickets are also available to buy in advance from the office for £1 per strip. If you’re unable to attend the charity night but would like to buy raffle tickets, then please feel free to do so. NVS will keep hold of your tickets and notify you if you win. This is due to all prizes needing to be claimed on the night of the event.

      We are sure it will be a fun-filled night, please come along and support if you can!

      The next meeting of the Mac Group will be Wednesday 17th May at 1.30pm. Our guest speaker this month is Judith Potts who is the founder of Esme’s Umbrella. She will be discussing the charity and the work that they carry out.

      Esme’s Umbrella is a charity which raises awareness for Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS). They host a website, a helpline and provide an information pack which includes an explanation of CBS, coping strategies, current research and how to access support for people who develop CBS - and their families.

      Please note that Judith will be joining us via video call which will be projected on to the wall.

    • Exploring Technologies for Future Wet Macular Degeneration Care – Ran by National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)

      About the event

      An event for people with experience of wet macular degeneration to share local research on how new technology might support future services.

      National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) are hosting an event on Wednesday 4th October from 10am - 4.30pm at The Boiler House, Newcastle University, NE1 7RU.

      The event is for people who are affected by wet macular degeneration and those supporting them.

      The day will focus on local research seeing how new technology could use eye photos to help plan injection treatment for individuals and improve their experience of clinic visits. Two breaks with lunch and refreshments will split the day into three parts looking at what opportunities there are to improve current care, what this new technology can do and how we might best use it to benefit people with wet macular degeneration.

      There will be plenty of time set aside for discussions and questions. There will also be talks and discussions from people living with macular degeneration, ophthalmologists innovating macular degeneration care and representatives from the Macular Society and NIHR. The aim is to give you a wider sense of research to improve macular degeneration care and how and why you might get involved more with these communities and activities locally.

      Our annual Christmas lunch will take place on Thursday 7th December 2023 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Newcastle.

      The lunch is priced at £17.00 for members and £30.00 for non members/additional guests. The price includes a 3 course lunch, after lunch refreshments and live entertainment.
